Background: Layla comes from very humble beginnings. Her and her family lived in a small village outside of Cairo, where they grew what they could and then took the little they could spare into Cairo to sell. Being from a small dessert village, raiders were a common thing, and when Layla was very young, there was an attack on the village. Layla and her mother were in Cairo at the time, and when they returned, they found the village burned, and most people dead, including Layla's father and brothers. Her older sisters had both been gone from the village before she was born, and so Layla was left with only her mother. She grew up as a normal girl in her village would, cleaning, gardening, selling what could be sold. She lived in little more than rags, but was still a happy child. Then, when she was 10, her mother fell ill. Being so poor, they could not afford a proper Healer, and none of the women in the village could do anything to help.
Finally, Layla's mother told her a story about a woman who could help. Her sister Cynara was a High Priestess at the temple to Bastet in Cairo. If Layla were to go there, Cynara would surely help. But it was not so. Unknown to her mother, Cynara was a witch, and when it had been discovered, had been chased from the temple by an angry mod accusing her of using witchcraft to fake Bastet's favor. Layla thought that all was lost when she heard this news, but an old wizard saw her by the temple and after hearing her story, told her that he knew were Cynara was. She was a teacher at Hogwarts.
Layla wasted no time in searching for this school, and finally finding it, watched her older sister, waiting for the right time to speak with her. Finally, her mother was so sick that Layla had no choice but to speak to the tall beautiful woman. Cynara agreed to go to Cairo, bringing a Healer friend with her. But it was too late. There was nothing that the Healer could do for Layla's mother, and shortly after they got to the village, she died.
Cynara took Layla back to London with her, where she sold the small flat she had been living in, and moved the two of them to a small village outside of London. They now live in a quaint little cottage with a large garden and friendly neighbors.
Since living with Cynara, Layla has learned that small things she used to be able to make happen as a child, things that she was thought odd for, were actually Magic. So now, she will start attending Hogwarts as a student in the fall.
Personality: Layla is a shy quiet girl. She didn't have many friends growing up, and always kept to herself. She's hard working, and likes to please others. Since her mother's death, she does not talk more than a word or two to people except for her sister. Cynara figures that it is part of Layla's grieving and that she will grow out of it once she gets to know people at school.
Likes: Sweets, flowers, fresh air
Dislikes: the cold, fire ants
Academic Outlook: Having never attended Muggle school, Layla had never had to sit down and actually take a class. But she did learn her tasks and chores very well and quickly from her Mother and the other women of her village. She works hard to please those who have given her her task.
Quirks: Very hard working. Very self motivated. A perfectionist in some ways, because the better the job is done, the happier her Mother would be with her.
Counter Quirks: She is very quiet and so if she does not understand something, has a hard time asking for help or a better explanation.
Appearance: Layla is very thin, not because that is her natural shape, but because over the last year she has been hiding out in the Forbidden Forest watching Cynara and travelling back and forth from Egypt to Hogwarts. She didn't get to eat much and lost a lot of weight, but a summer living with Cynara has started to put some meat back on her bones. She has large brown eyes that seem to take in everything. Her olive skin and dark hair are typical of her heritage and she is a little on the tall side for a girl her age.
